AUSTRALIAN 1850S EXPORT BOWIE KNIFE BY JAMES RODGERS

3800,00

DESCRIPTION
An antique Sheffield-produced Bowie knife with a nickelsilver-mounted staghorn hilt, made for the Australian market, approximately in the 1850s. The fine steel blade is signed by James Rodgers, Sheffield and it is beautifully and clearly etched with a motto: “FOR AUSTRALIA”. The knife comes with its original black leather sheath with gold floral decorations. The sheath has a leather belt hanger which might be a privately made. The brass sheath chape seems to be a working life replacement. This type of a bowie with an Australian attribution seems to be extremely rare and it was probably made for the period of the 1850s Australian Gold Rushes.

CONDITION
The knife is in good antique condition. The blade is in its original untouched polish. The sheath has once bent and cracked on the edge. The knife fits well in its sheath.
