LEFT-HAND DAGGER
Germany / c. 1640–1650

A short-quillioned dagger of high quality decorated with silver studs and fruits – symbols of fertility. Signed on the both sides of the ricasso part of the blade by Bartholomeus (Meues) Berns, Solingen (recorded 1611–1650). The blade has double fuller on ricasso with pierced decoration and one single fuller also pierced going throughout almost the full length of the blade. Original fine silver binding. Overall quality and condition of this dagger is extremely fine.

The blade has distinct form of sparrow peak on the tip as it was made for purpose to cut through mens’ doublets. Some of the late main gauches were not proportionally practical as left hand daggers anymore like this one from around 1640’s or even a bit later but mens’ fashion still demanded a sword and a dagger decorated en suite. The form of the handle started to have proportions from the transitional rapiers or pillow swords.
