OTTOMAN-STYLE MANCHAUX DAGGER
DAGGER IN OTTOMAN FASHION

A fine-quality antique dagger with bone handle and red velvet-covered scabbard with fitted with silver-gilt mounts. The wide-fullered steel blade is made in the style of the 16th century Ottoman court daggers. The blade appears to be very fine granule damascus or at least showing lots of tiny particles of martensite on surface. The upper scabbard locket is marked by the manufacturer, Manchaux Paris. The both scabbard mounts are French silver-hallmarked.
The style and quality of Manchaux manufactory is undeniably one of the finest in oriental fashion that started in Europe after the Napoleonic campaigns. Europe had long been multicultural and oriental arms were found very decorative, mystique and fashionable and they were produced in many European cities to sell directly to oriental market or locally as gifts or to aristocracy following the latest fashion trends. The European governments made even some of their cavalry sabres according to the 18th century Persian and Ottoman types of sabres. Hence they were called mameluk type of sabres.
Manchaux pieces can be found in every major collections and museums due to their distinctive style and quality. From the French makers they could be easily put among the best makers like Butet and Lepage. The dagger is in beautiful antique condition.
